Moving politics in the direction of the working class requires the working class.
When I ran in 2018, I had no money. I was outspent 10 to 1. Millions of dollars were spent against me.
And it’s funny, because the political establishment likes to tell this story where they say, “Oh, no one saw her coming! They fell asleep at the wheel!”
That is not true. They tell that story so they look like they didn’t lose.
Ironically, the morning after I won, Andrew Cuomo of all people said that my existence was a ‘fluke.' That I was here by accident.
And that’s not surprising. I’m used to being underestimated.
But what people don’t often see and understand is that you can outwork that.
It’s not going to happen every single time, but that’s why we need so many people to do what Zohran Mamdani is doing.
A lot of times people think that being engaged is either electoral or it’s all activism — but it’s actually the combined power of both of these things that have prevented autocracies from taking over in other circumstances.
