john,
I wanted to take a moment to remind you why I first ran for office.
Before Congress, I worked as a pediatrician in Issaquah for nearly 20 years. My days were filled with the laughter (and occasional tears) of kids, and the quiet courage of parents trying to do right by their families—even when the system made that harder than it should be.
I saw personally what it meant for families to navigate the healthcare system. I saw parents delay appointments because they hadn’t yet met their deductible. I saw the relief when insurance covered a needed treatment, and the frustration when it didn't. Those moments are what drove me to run for Congress—because our previous representative voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act just days after I met with his office to discuss how critical it was to save the ACA. Healthcare isn't just another policy debate for me; it's personal.
As a doctor, and as someone who lives with Type 1 diabetes, I know what it means to depend on affordable, reliable care. And I know how terrifying it can be when that stability is threatened. And right now, that's exactly what's happening. Open enrollment for Affordable Care Act coverage starts on November 1st, but because Congress hasn't extended the extra ACA subsidies that help keep premiums affordable, millions of families could see their costs skyrocket when they renew their plans.
Some states are warning it's already too late to fix their rates before open enrollment. That means families could open their renewal letters and find out their premiums have gone way up—all because Congress didn't act in time. And when care costs too much, people drop coverage and try to get by without seeing a doctor. That’s a big risk to take. And that's why I'm fighting to protect the Affordable Care Act, to extend these subsidies, and to make sure every family in our community can afford to see a doctor when they need to.
We've made so much progress over the last few years, like lowering prescription drug costs, capping insulin prices, and expanding coverage for people across Washington and beyond. But it only works if people can stay covered. This is what keeps me up at night, and it's what drives me every single day in Congress. I promised myself I'd do something about it; when you hear me talking about healthcare, know that it's not about politics, it's about people.
Thank you for being part of this work and for your unwavering support.
