It's Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. I need to tell you about a case my office recently prosecuted that shows exactly why this work matters.

A drug dealer was using Instagram to sell dangerous drugs to Arizona children.

He advertised his products on social media like it was a legitimate business — posting menus with prices, linking to messaging apps where kids could place orders. When we searched his residence, we found LSD, psychedelic mushrooms, ecstasy, alprazolam pills, marijuana, and THC products.

My office secured nearly a decade in prison for this individual who was targeting kids.

This wasn't his first offense. He had prior felony convictions and was on probation when he started selling to minors through social media. He knew exactly what he was doing.

But here's what makes me furious: social media companies are enabling this.

An NIH study from 2023 showed that up to 13% of social media posts promote illegal drug sales. Two years later, dealers are still brazenly advertising on these platforms — some even pay to make their products more visible. And the algorithms are driving teen accounts directly to these posts.

The National Crime Prevention Council estimates 80% of teen and young adult fentanyl poisoning deaths can be traced to social media contact.

My office is holding these companies accountable.

We launched a website tracking cases where social media platforms are named in connection with criminal activity. Even though federal law shields these companies from liability, we're shining a light on the role they play in enabling drug trafficking that targets Arizona's kids.

When a parent contacted Buckeye police because their child bought drugs through Instagram, my office made sure that the dealer faced serious consequences.
