Did you see this New York Times headline, John? While over 700,000 federal employees have been forced to put their jobs on hold, there have been some exceptions: namely, those tasked with executing Trump’s plans to produce dirty fossil fuels, pollute our environment, and crush clean energy. The polluter-in-chief is leaning on his January declaration of a “national energy emergency”, and a Department of Interior spokesperson even defended the continuation of fossil fuel projects during the shutdown as “necessary”. But the facts tell another story. Right now, the U.S. is producing record levels of oil and gas. And although electricity demand is up, the White House has been throwing obstacles in the way of affordable, renewable energy.
It’s obvious that after spending at least $445 million to put Trump back in the White House and influence Congress, Big Oil is calling the shots. They don’t care if they destroy our public lands, unleash neurotoxins into our air and water that make us all sicker, or exacerbate the climate crisis by rolling back emission limits. All they care about are their own profits. John, this is why we work so hard to elect climate champions at all levels of government. Now more than ever, as the Trump Administration tries to destroy our planet for their own gain even as a shutdown drags on, we need a firewall of leaders at local, municipal, and state levels who will challenge their greed.
