Hi John,

I am writing to you today with a call to prayer. The storm now known as Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified into a life-threatening hurricane in the Caribbean.

Here’s a current snapshot of what people in the Caribbean are facing:

• Melissa is currently forecast to make landfall in Jamaica late tonight, Monday, into tomorrow morning, Tuesday, October 28. 
• The storm has strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph and possibly higher. 
• It is expected to bring extreme rainfall (up to 40 inches in mountainous areas), storm surge (as much as 9–13 feet in vulnerable coastal zones) and catastrophic flood and landslide risks, especially in Jamaica’s south and west. 
• The storm will not stop there: portions of eastern Cuba and the southern Bahamas are forecast to be impacted as well. 

In light of this, we at Unto are already mobilizing. Our local staff in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean are preparing now — securing supplies, coordinating with local leaders and getting ready for immediate relief the moment the storm passes.

But first and foremost: we are asking you to pray.

Pray for those who are in the direct path — the families in low-lying coastal communities, the children in shelters, the fishermen securing their boats tonight.

Pray for protection: for power to stay on where possible, for roofs to hold, for flood waters to not overrun safe zones.

Pray for the teams on the ground as they work under dangerous conditions.

Join me in praying for all who are in the path of the storm. Pray they would know the peace and protection of the One who “is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
