Dear John,
A Historic Countdown Begins!
This month marks a defining moment for climate justice in Canada: one year until trial in La Rose v. His Majesty the King—the first youth-led federal climate lawsuit ever to go to trial in Canadian history.
Filed by 15 young people from across the country, the case argues that the federal government’s continued promotion and expansion of fossil fuels violates the youth plaintiffs’ Charter Rights to life, liberty and security of the person.
When trial begins on October 26, 2026, these youth, alongside world-renowned experts in climate science, renewable energy, economics, and children’s health, will present irrefutable evidence showing how Canada’s policies are fueling the climate crisis that is harming them, and how a clean-energy future is both technologically and economically within reach.
The youth are asking the Federal Court of Canada to declare that the government’s conduct violates their rights and freedoms, and order the creation and implementation of a climate recovery plan to decarbonize Canada’s energy system, stabilize the climate, and protect the rights of youth.
And as the countdown to trial begins, Our Children’s Trust is proud to announce a new partnership with West Coast Environmental Law (WCEL) — one of Canada’s most respected public-interest environmental law organizations. Together, we’re strengthening the legal foundation of La Rose, providing the plaintiffs with vital support, and building momentum toward this historic trial.
From the Yukon to Vancouver, these youth are standing up for their rights — and for a livable, just, and sustainable Canada.
