John, this is Maggie Hassan, and I’d like to take a moment to talk about my 37-year-old son, Ben.
When Ben was born with cerebral palsy, I knew his life would look a little different from other kids. As Ben grew up, I became an advocate to ensure that kids with disabilities would have every opportunity to succeed.
Being Ben’s mother taught me about the critical role that public health plays in helping people with disabilities thrive. At times, Ben has needed up to nine doctors, a dozen or more different medications, and 24-hour care. So when I hear top public health officials like RFK Jr. make offensive statements about folks with disabilities and attempt to slash the programs that support them, I am outraged. And so are millions of Americans.
RFK Jr.’s radical conspiracy theories, dangerous anti-vaccine rhetoric, and disinformation campaign around autism undermine key rights and protections for people with disabilities. We can’t stop calling him out.
Donald Trump and RFK Jr. are attempting to undo the progress we’ve made — slashing Medicaid and planning cuts to Social Security, disability grant programs, and affordable housing access. This injustice and cruelty cannot stand.
I’m more than ready to continue taking action in the face of RFK Jr.’s prejudice, falsehoods, and malice, but I need your support: Will you please chip in $5 or more before my October deadline to fuel my work in the Senate and elect a wave of disability champions in the midterms?
