What’s really scary about Canada’s retreat from peace

Last Friday marked the 80th anniversary of the United Nations — a promise the world made to never again let war define our future.
Canada helped build that promise. We shaped the Landmines Treaty, the International Criminal Court, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We were peacekeepers, bridge-builders, and defenders of diplomacy.
But today, that legacy is slipping away.
Canada’s defence spending is set to quadruple before the end of the decade, while our support for the UN remains stagnant, a fraction of what we now spend preparing for war. Meanwhile, the UN’s own budget has been cut by 15%, forcing critical programs for refugees, food security, and disarmament to shrink or shut down.
What’s really scary is Canada’s silence is a choice.
The Green Party believes we can do better than this. We can invest in peace as seriously as we invest in weapons. We can rebuild Canada’s moral voice on the world stage, one that stands for human rights, disarmament, and real global cooperation.
