Right now, Swing Left volunteers are working hard in Virginia, donating to our target races, making phone calls, and knocking on doors to connect with voters before Election Day on November 4th. In this final eight-day stretch, every conversation with an undecided voter could help tip the scale in these crucial races.
And with the recent news that Virginia Democrats are advancing a redistricting effort in response to Republican gerrymanders across the country, the stakes just got even higher.
If successful, new maps in Virginia could shift two or three additional House seats to Democrats—countering Republican-drawn gerrymanders in states like Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina that aim to lock in GOP control of Congress.
Here’s how it works: redrawing Virginia’s congressional maps mid-decade requires altering the state constitution. Lawmakers would need to approve the amendment in two consecutive sessions of the state legislature—once this year, and again in January after newly elected delegates are sworn in.
That’s why it’s so important to maintain and expand Democrats’ majority in the state legislature this year. And just one more reason we’re working to flip eight competitive House of Delegates seats, alongside supporting Democratic candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general.
Once approved by lawmakers, the redistricting measure would go to Virginia voters to approve in a special election next year.
Because our goal is always to make sure your time and money go where they’ll have the greatest impact, we’re focusing fundraising in Virginia on the races that need it most right now: eight competitive House of Delegate seats and Jay Jones’s campaign for attorney general.
