This past week Lauren Boebert began propagating a new conspiracy that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is a non-human reptilian.
Her theory draws upon the ideas of Holocaust denier David Icke who claims that Jews and many powerful people across the globe are a disguised reptilian species that are working to exterminate humanity.
Boebert and the far right deploy conspiracies like this to dehumanize and otherize their enemies.
Ask any historian and they will tell you — dehumanization paves the way for human rights violations, war crimes, and genocide:
There is no difference between the images on the left and the right.
The vast majority of human beings have an innate disinclination towards violence against their fellow man. Dehumanization helps regular people overcome this. When you think of your enemies as inhuman it is easier to commit violence against them.
This is why Trump is saying that Democrats are gnats that must be crushed. It’s why Boebert calls Trans people “demonic” and blames them for mass shootings. And it's why she is saying our leaders are reptilian. They are priming their base to accept violence against us.
This will get people killed.
Stopping the far-right’s escalating violence starts with taking away Boebert’s podium.
She is vulnerable. In 2022 she won by 546 votes and had to flee to a new district. In the new district, Trisha Calvarese had the best performance a Democrat has ever had in Colorado’s 4th while Boebert massively underperformed Trump.
