[link removed] [[link removed]]Hi John, it’s Sarah Trone Garriot.
As you may know, in addition to being a state senator, I’m also a Lutheran minister. My faith has always played an important role in my life, and I wanted to take the opportunity to share a bit more about it. This is a bit of a longer story, so if you don’t have the time to read it all the way through , I hope you’ll consider joining my community of supporters today by chipping in a few dollars [[link removed]] or sharing this with some friends.

To me, public service is a calling – and it’s a calling that has come to me in many different ways throughout my life. And to be honest with you, I never expected it would lead me to run for elected office.
My call to service first came after I graduated from college, and it brought me to Gallup, New Mexico, where I joined AmeriCorps as a VISTA program volunteer at a domestic violence project. I dedicated a year of my life to working at a legal aid clinic there and helping victims of domestic violence get the support they needed to rebuild their lives.
It was there that I saw the important role that religious leaders can play in our communities, and I knew that I could do more. I considered becoming ordained right then, but I first took a job as a chaplain in a children’s hospital while attending seminary.
I can’t sugarcoat it; many of those experiences in the hospital were difficult. I stood with families during some of the most challenging times in their lives and offered compassion and kindness to all sorts of different folks, kindness we too often forget to show one another nowadays.
I then served a parish for a community of about 300 people in one of the most Republican counties in Virginia. I have always believed that we have more in common than what drives us apart, so I picked up the church directory and went and visited every single person where they lived to get to know them and learn what they cared about.
It didn’t matter that we weren’t in agreement on every issue politically; we did incredible things and worked through some challenging issues together. And that’s a value I still hold to this day. We are so much more than our politics, and we need leaders who are willing to see people as individuals first.
Years later, my call to serve brought me to Iowa.
I’ve worn a lot of different hats in my life – as a mom, a volunteer, a nonprofit leader, a minister, a State Senator – but my faith has always guided me to do the most good for my community. Politics-as-usual is failing Iowa, so I’m offering a new kind of leadership to the people of Iowa’s third congressional district – one that puts community first.
If this story resonated with you and if you’re with me in this journey to win this seat, I sincerely hope you’ll consider joining my team.
