Hi John,

Week 6 of the Perdue Rescue Trial just concluded. The prosecution spent all week cross-examining defendant Zoe Rosenberg, trying to distract the jury by going through her old social media posts, all the way back to when she was 14 years old. They were trying to put her on trial over her belief in animal rights, even though this was already well-established.

But our legal team, led by the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project, continued to bring Petaluma Poultry’s animal cruelty front and center. They secured some key wins this week, including that *Zoe was allowed to testify about her prior observations while investigating a Petaluma Poultry factory farm* that sends chickens to the slaughterhouse where the rescue on trial took place. She told the jury that she saw thousands of birds crowded together, many of them very sick and unable to stand up, others dead and left among the living. She told the jury that she rescued two birds she named Vincent and Petunia. *Vincent was down on the floor, breathing heavily and unable to move when she nudged him. Petunia was on her back, with a bloody, injured wing, and she shrieked in pain when she was touched.
*
The trial is not over yet, but the case will likely be put to the jury early next week. *They will soon be asked ‘is it a rescue or a crime?’ It’s the same question* *asked by The Guardian* ( [link removed] ) *, the latest publication to cover this historic trial.* Thoughtful coverage like this is one way in which the positive impact of these trials extends well beyond the courtroom and well beyond the verdict.

*This is why continued support is so essential to maximizing the impact of these trials. Right now, a supporter is boosting monthly gifts of any size with an additional $100, up to $10,000. It takes big risks to achieve big rewards.

It’s only through this trial that the stories of Petaluma Poultry’s victims, like Vincent and Petunia, and Poppy, Aster, Ivy and Azalea, are being heard in a court of law.

The outcome of the Perdue Rescue Trial is still unknown, but I am confident that together, we can make it a win for the animals.

With gratitude,

Cassie
