The government has now been shut down for 25 days, and every day that passes, more is at stake for Wisconsin families, communities, and our economy.
House Republicans did our job. On September 19, we voted to keep the government open with a clean funding bill that fully supports essential services and keeps our country running.
This is the same bipartisan funding bill Senate Democrats supported thirteen times under President Biden. The only difference now is politics. They refuse to work with President Trump and are putting partisanship ahead of the American people.
If this continues, hardworking Wisconsinites will pay the price. Each week this shutdown drags on, Wisconsin’s economy loses roughly $234 million in GDP — nearly $1 billion every month. Over 30,000 federal workers in our state are either furloughed or working without pay. After 30 days, nearly 689,000 Wisconsinites, including 267,000 children, will feel the impact through delays and disruptions to programs like SNAP and Wisconsin’s FoodShare, which provide critical nutrition assistance to families in need. On top of that, consumer spending is projected to fall by $295 million each month, hurting small businesses and local communities across our state.
These are real consequences for real people, all because Senate Democrats continue to block the House-passed plan to responsibly reopen the government.
It's time to put our hardworking American families first and end this unnecessary shutdown.
