Your Latest Briefing from the Liberal Democrats in Parliament.

Dear John,

This month, we’re celebrating more incredible Liberal Democrat wins in
Parliament!

Thanks to our relentless campaigning, we have secured crucial concessions
from the Government on support for carers and the quality of military family
homes.

Read more about this and other recent contributions from Lib Dems in
Parliament below. 🔽

Lib Dem Wins: - Support for Young Carers & Carer’s Allowance

Last week, Alison Bennett MP, our Care and Carers Spokesperson, secured
changes to theMental Health Bill <[link removed]> to
better support young carers whose parents have a mental illness.

Hundreds of thousands of children live in homes where they are caring for, or
affected by, someone with a severe mental illness. These young carers are more
vulnerable to developing their own mental health issues, but are far too often
not identified and do not get the support they need.

Alison’s proposed amendment led to a Government concession that will ensure
mental health practitioners check if an adult is a parent, helping to better
identify and support their children.

Later this week, we won another concession for carers in the House of Lords -
the Government finally announced when their review into the Carer’s Allowance
overpayments scandal will be completed.

Many carers have been forced to repay their entire allowance due to earning
just a few pence over the earnings limit.

Lord Palmer’s amendment to the Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery)
Bill <[link removed]> would have stopped the pursuit of
repayments until the review is concluded and reforms implemented, prompting the
Government to announce its publication by the end of the year.

Lib Dem Win: - Homes for military heroes

We secured a substantial win for military families earlier this month when the
Government conceded to our campaign to improve the quality of military family
homes - agreeing to incorporate the contents of our amendment into theRenters’
Rights Bill <[link removed]>.

Our military personnel sacrifice so much for our country - the least they
deserve is a decent home for them and their family. But far too often, they
live in dire conditions with pest infestations, black mould, damp, flooding,
and unreliable heating and hot water supply in winter.

The Ministry of Defence will now be required to assess service family housing
annually and report on whether it meets the Decent Homes Standard - creating a
clear statutory mechanism for identifying and addressing shortcomings.

Despite the Government initially rejecting Gideon Amos MP’s amendment in the
House of Commons, it finally conceded in the House of Lords, following a
proposed amendment by Baroness Grender.

Calling for a new UK-EU Customs Union

This week, the Chancellor Rachel Reeves finally admitted what we have long
known - that the Conservatives’ botched Brexit deal has done severe long-term
damage to the UK economy.

But the Government must now turn these words into actions.

At Prime Minister’s Questions, Ed Davey MP asked whether the Government would
now listen to our calls for a bespoke new UK-EU customs union to cut through
red tape and unleash trade with our European neighbours.

With the economy facing so many challenges, from Trump’s tariffs to continuing
high inflation, a new customs union with the EU would be one of the single
biggest steps you could take to boost British businesses.

You can support our campaign to turbocharge our economy by fixing Britain’s
trade, by signing and sharing our petition here:

Standing up against extremism

Earlier this month, the far-right extremist Tommy Robinson claimed that Elon
Musk was paying his legal fees to cover his trial for allegedly failing to
comply with counterterrorism police.

It is dangerous that someone with so much power over what we see online can
also be funding a man who spreads dangerous rhetoric and extremism on our
streets.

At Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) last week, our Deputy Leader Daisy
Cooper MP called for an assessment into the threat Elon Musk poses to UK
democracy, as any other foreign extremist giving such help would:

Responding to the Israel-Gaza ceasefire deal

We welcome the Israel-Gaza ceasefire deal signed earlier this month.

After two years of captivity, the release of all the remaining living
hostages is a moment of optimism and relief. It's now essential that Hamas
follows through and releases the bodies of those hostages killed in their
captivity. The Israeli Government must also ensure the rapid expansion of aid
into Gaza.

In response to the Prime Minister’s statement to the House of Commons, Ed
Davey MP expressed hope that the conflict and humanitarian catastrophe can
finally come to an end, but stressed that there was still important work to be
done:

In the House of Lords, Lord Purvis highlighted the scale of reconstruction
needed in Gaza, calling for the UK to play a key role:

Watch ➜
<[link removed]>

The situation remains fragile, with renewed violence earlier this week. We’ve
called for the US, Arab and Gulf states to apply maximum pressure to prevent
further conflict which risks collapsing the ceasefire. Both sides must fulfil
their obligations - with the Israeli Government ramping up aid into Gaza and
the Hamas terrorists releasing the bodies of hostages killed in their captivity.

The ceasefire must be protected - it is the only means towards securing a
permanent peace and two-state solution.

Protecting the rights of Hong Kongers

Hong Kongers living in the UK, and across the world, face an increasingly
robust and alarming campaign of transnational repression directed by Beijing,
including intimidation and bounties for the arrest of pro-democracy activists
living abroad.

Having fled repression, Hong Kongers deserve to feel safe and secure in their
new home here in the UK. Sadly, the Government is currently not doing enough to
make this happen.

At Prime Minister’s Questions last week, Daisy Cooper MP asked the Prime
Minister how he would respond to accusations that the Government is trading
Hong Kongers’ security for closer ties with China.

Watch ➜ <[link removed]>

At Autumn Conference in Bournemouth, we passed a new policy to protect the
rights of Hong Kongers. This includes opposing Labour’s plans to make it harder
for Hong Kongers to settle in the UK permanently, introducing targeted
sanctions against Chinese officials responsible for bounties, and stopping the
building of a new Chinese ‘super embassy’ in London.

Remembering Ming Campbell

It was with great sadness that we lost our former leader, and peer in the
House of Lords, Menzies Campbell last month.

To honour his extraordinary life and commitment to public service, Ed Davey
MP delivered a tribute to Ming in the House of Commons:
