Dear Friend,

In over 80 countries, it is a crime or fundamentally unsafe to be LGBTQ or HIV-positive. In order to escape grave dangers to their lives and health, thousands of individuals in our community sought asylum in the U.S. for the opportunity to live openly, safely, and freely. Many of our clients simply tell us, “Asylum saved my life.”

For decades, we have fought and won many battles to protect access to asylum in the U.S., but we have never faced a threat like the one we’re facing today. On June 15, 2020, the Trump administration issued a proposal that would eviscerate the asylum system in the United States. If enacted, no one will get in, no matter how strong their case, no matter how great their need.

To learn more about what this proposal means, how you can help fight it, and other critical work Immigration Equality is doing, please join our Emergency Impact Update next week.

Speakers:

Aaron C. Morris, Executive Director

Bridget Crawford, Legal Director

Adiel Kiviti, Immigration Equality client

Adiel's daughter was just recognized as a U.S. citizen from birth by a federal judge in Maryland. She was previously denied a U.S. passport due to a discriminatory State Department policy that treats children of same-sex couples as “born out of wedlock.” We will update everyone on the status of this case on Tuesday.
Roee, Kessem, Lev, and Adiel Kiviti

Thank you,

Sidney Jackson, Development Director
