Friend — There’s a good chance your energy bill has gone way up over the last year, and there’s a simple explanation why: A.I.
That’s right, as Big Tech companies like Meta and Open A.I. continue to invest billions and billions of dollars into data centers and other A.I. infrastructure, the cost of the immense amount of energy they consume is being passed on to you.
One Bloomberg report found that electricity costs have risen 267% in the last five years in areas near these data centers. That means a monthly household electricity bill that was once $100 in 2020 could be as high as $367 today.
The last thing Americans need during an all-out cost of living crisis under Donald Trump is skyrocketing energy bills. And the last thing our planet needs in the midst of a climate emergency is Big Tech companies continuing to burn up fossil fuels and waste clean water at a faster rate than we’ve ever seen.
That’s why Ed Markey has been ringing the alarm bell on A.I. for years now, and it’s why he introduced the Artificial Intelligence Environmental Impacts Act back in 2024, which would develop a reporting structure to get to the bottom of A.I.’s electrical and environmental effects and steer the industry towards sustainable practices.
But as A.I. companies continue to race at warp speed to scale up this costly infrastructure, it's clear that something must be done right now to curb this explosion in energy usage and protect working families from rising costs.
In solidarity,
Team Markey
