Greater Greater Washington

Reston shows there is no quick fix to good development. Are long-term residents the only folks who should get a say? A look back at the 20-year-old development of DC USA in Columbia Heights. Opinion: Everyone was “new” at some point, and even if they were born here, their family was “new” at one point too. They may have come here for work or for school. Dan Reed (Maryland Policy Director) • October 23, 2025

On the walk home, there were townhouses like mine on one side, and on the other were bigger, stand-alone houses. I thought nothing of it until, a few days in, one kid said to me: “Your family is poor because you live in a townhouse. I bet your house is the size of that truck over there.” He lived directly across from me, in a “real house.”
