Opinion: Everyone was “new” at some point, and even if they were born here, their family was “new” at one point too. They may have come here for work or for school. It may be a forever home, or a stop along the way that stuck, but there was a time when there were people who wanted these now “established” residents to be ignored too.

Columbia Heights’ mall is into its second decade. It can sometimes feel as if it was dropped into the neighborhood to jumpstart change, but it was only one piece of wider planning efforts.

On the walk home, there were townhouses like mine on one side, and on the other were bigger, stand-alone houses. I thought nothing of it until, a few days in, one kid said to me: “Your family is poor because you live in a townhouse. I bet your house is the size of that truck over there.” He lived directly across from me, in a “real house.”
