Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org | October 24, 2025 — Islamophobia is a bipartisan issue. It is fueled openly by both parties, often perpetuated when politically convenient, and continues to threaten the safety of American Muslims across the country.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council condemns former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Islamophobic remarks during a conversation with conservative radio host Sid Rosenberg, where he used 9/11 to attack Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani. To suggest that a Muslim elected official would “cheer” during an act of terror is not just abhorrent— it is dangerous. This rhetoric feeds the same fear and hatred that have long been weaponized against American Muslims.

We commend Governor Kathy Hochul and Representatives Jerry Nadler (NY-12) and Dan Goldman (NY-10) for standing firmly with Mamdani and rejecting this bigotry. Their leadership sets an example for what morality looks like in a moment when anti-Muslim sentiment is being normalized in public discourse and increasingly, in elections.

We call on every elected official who has not yet spoken to condemn Cuomo’s remarks and affirm that Islamophobia and anti-Muslim bigotry have no home here in America. The fight against bigotry requires more than silence: it demands collective and vocal accountability.
