John,
Trump has come right out and said it: He is explicitly directing the IRS to harass and focus audits on liberal individuals and institutions, and any who criticize him or his far-right authoritarian agenda.
“I think Harvard’s a disgrace,” Trump said, following up his insult with his threat: “But tax-exempt status, I mean, it’s a privilege. It’s really a privilege. And it’s been abused by a lot more than Harvard.”
Having faced RICO charges in the Georgia election interference case for bringing in slates of fake electors, Trump is now utilizing this weapon too against prominent liberal donor George Soros: “We’re going to look into Soros… I think it’s a RICO case against him and other people, because this is more than like protests. This is real agitation. This is riots in the streets.”
According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, NBC News and The Guardian, the administration is actively remaking the IRS into a heat-seeking missile aimed at those he perceives to be his enemies. He is actively installing loyal operatives, weakening internal oversight, and fast-tracking audits of left-leaning organizations.
Send a direct message to your Congress members: Investigate Trump’s weaponization of the IRS against his perceived enemies.
Trump has directed senior Treasury and IRS officials to compile lists of prominent liberal donors -- including George Soros and foundations affiliated with him -- for scrutiny. He is strategically placing Trump-aligned agents in the IRS Criminal Investigation division and reducing the role of IRS lawyers who traditionally guard against politically-motivated investigations.
Beyond universities, watchdogs point to the broader pattern: progressive individuals and organizations are being implicitly threatened with IRS audits, tax-status revocations, and criminal investigations if they remain critical of the administration. Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden raises the alarm: “The implicit threat is that if you give to a progressive cause, they’ll deem you a terrorist and ruin your life.”
Congress must act immediately. We need Congress to:
-
Launch a bipartisan investigation,
-
Subpoena internal documents from the Treasury Department and the IRS
-
Hold public hearings, and
-
Pass legislation to prevent political interference in tax enforcement.
This is selective enforcement -- a form of political retribution, which is not legal. The IRS is supposed to function impartially, but now it is being repurposed as a tool to intimidate dissent and silence opposition. Turning the power of government against perceived enemies is a flat-out direct assault on the democratic principle of equal treatment under the law.
Tell Congress: Investigate the weaponization of the IRS.
Thank you for standing up for the rule of law in America!
