Growing up as a Black kid in Chicago, I faced this feeling constantly. My birth mother struggled with substance abuse, and because of my humble beginnings, people often underestimated what I could achieve.
But I had my guiding light—my Dad’s words: “All you’ve gotta do is try.”
With those words fueling me, I decided to give back to my community and try to make a positive change in the world
And once I became a community organizer, I was able to live this ideal every day.
