Hi Friend,

Today, on Day 24 of the Republican’s government shutdown, many federal workers will miss their first paycheck. With the cost of living already way too high, people can’t afford to miss a paycheck — it risks not being able to pay rent, put food on the table, or pay the bills. That’s why I’m focused on finding a path to protecting health care and reopening the government, as quickly as possible.

I know that it’s a very difficult, stressful time for so many members of our community. My team and I are working closely with local organizations and food banks to ensure they have enough resources to support the influx of people who need help as they’re forced to work without pay or are furloughed.

If you need help or have questions about what this shutdown means, please visit my website: https://sarajacobs.house.gov/government-shutdown-resources

Democrats have been extremely clear about what we’re fighting for: we want to protect health care for millions of Americans by extending the ACA premium tax credits so insurance costs don’t double AND we want to reopen the government.

But President Trump and Republican leaders in Congress have refused to meet with Democratic leadership to negotiate an end to this shutdown. Speaker Mike Johnson has repeatedly cancelled votes and has refused to bring House Republicans back to Washington, even though Democrats like myself have been there. On the most basic level, they are failing to do their jobs. (And President Trump seems more concerned with demolishing half of the White House to build his ballroom…)

But our work hasn’t stopped. Here is a snapshot of what I’ve been doing in the past few weeks to support our community and fight to prevent thousands of people in San Diego alone from being priced out of health care.

I joined the San Diego Food Bank and Jewish Family Service in supporting our neighbors who are federal workers and not receiving a paycheck during Republicans’ government shutdown.

I was glad to meet with local nonprofit partners – including ASYMCA, SDMAC, STEP, Zero8Hundred, and Feeding San Diego – to discuss the impacts of the government shutdown on our service members and their families and how these organizations are stepping up to provide support.

I hosted a conversation with military families in Murphy Canyon to provide an update on the ongoing government shutdown and hear about their concerns. I’m doing everything I can to support our military community and reopen the government.

I met with local health care providers who confirmed that if Republicans let ACA premium tax credits expire, thousands of San Diegans will see HUGE increases in their health insurance costs and be forced to decide between medical treatment and rent.

These are hard times, but I’m always proud of the way our community responds to challenges. We can get through this together.

Warmly,
