Severe weather preparedness
Severe Weather
*It is Severe Weather season and now is the time to prepare, so that you and your family are protected. Here are a few reminders:*
* Know your risk of flooding so that you can take precautions. Go to fema.gov/flood-maps [ [link removed] ] to view flood maps.
* It takes 30 days for a flood insurance policy to take effect. Homeowner’s insurance does not cover flooding, so contact your insurance agent today, or go to floodsmart.gov [ [link removed] ].
* Assemble a disaster supply kit with food, water, medical supplies, battery-powered radio and NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, batteries, flashlights, and other items. For more information about assembling a disaster supplies kit, visit ready.gov [ [link removed] ].
* Consider protecting your property [ [link removed] ] by adding waterproof veneer to exterior walls or raising your electrical system. Go to fema.gov [ [link removed] ] for more information on retrofitting. This may require a building permit, [ [link removed] ] so contact City of Hurst Community Development [ [link removed] ] before starting any work.
* Keeping rivers and its tributaries clean and free of debris are vital to alleviating flooding. Remember, only rain down the drain. The Don’t Mess with Texas Water Program [ [link removed] ] can help prevent illegal dumping that affects surface waters of Texas.
For more information on severe weather preparedness, click the button below. The City of Hurst uses the CodeRED Emergency Notification System to notify the entire city or only the affected areas, via phone, about emergency situations, including severe weather. The system is available to all Hurst residents free of charge. Sign up by clicking the button below to receive emergency notifications within minutes!

Halloween Safety tips
Halloween Safety Tips
Halloween is almost here! ?? The City of Hurst is wishing you a fun and safe Halloween! Before you head out to trick-or-treat, take a minute to read these six tips to make sure you and your family stay safe.
* Trick-or-treat with trusted neighbors. Walk neighborhoods you are familiar with and only visit well-lit homes.
* Carry flashlights to help make sure you are easily seen.
* Dress to impress…..safely. Make sure costumes and candy bags or pails are reflective. Costumes shouldn’t drag too far on the ground to avoid tripping, and masks, hats, and shoes should be well-fitting.
* Watch for kids. If you plan to be driving during trick-or-treat hours, watch for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs. Be sure to enter and exit driveways carefully. Turn on headlights early to spot kids from further away.
* Stay on the path. Don’t stray from the well-marked routes to get to the candy. Always use the sidewalk, and do not cut across yards or use alleys. Wherever possible, cross the road at a crosswalk.
* When in doubt, throw the candy out. Avoid candy that has loose wrappings, is completely unwrapped, has puncture holes, or is homemade and not factory-wrapped.
Boo safe out there, and have fun! More safety tips can be found by clicking the button below.

CERT
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
*Registration for the Fall CERT Basic Training class is going on now through October 31 at 5 p.m. Only 20 spots are available and will fill up quickly!*
The Hurst CERT team will be hosting a CERT Basic Training Class. *This class will meet on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 7–9 in Hurst.*
The CERT program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community.
It is taught by a trained team of first responders and experienced volunteers who have completed a CERT Train-the-Trainer course conducted by their state training office for emergency management, or FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI). CERT training includes disaster preparedness, small fire suppression, basic medical procedures and light search and rescue operations.
This training is sponsored by the Hurst Fire Department, FEMA and managed by Hurst CERT. Seating is limited to 20 participants with a 12 participant minimum. Full participation is required to complete the course.
All the details, including application, are available at the button below.
