| A Message from Gabe:

 Greetings Rhode Islanders,

As the shutdown continues, I’m focused on the impact on Rhode Islanders.

This week, I raised the alarm on the shutdown’s impact on hunger and essential nutrition assistance for over 144,000 of our neighbors who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. I met with the new CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, Melissa Cherney, and state leaders to discuss the looming crisis of the Trump Administration’s claim that there isn’t funding to pay SNAP benefits on November 1. Over 35,000 Rhode Islanders and 42 million Americans, including 16 million children nationwide, could go hungry if Congress does not act. This includes many seniors and veterans who have served this country. Combined with the Big, Ugly Law’s nearly $187 billion in cuts to SNAP and Trump’s tariff policies that are driving up grocery prices, too many people are struggling to put food on the table.

| Conservatives need to end this shutdown, have bipartisan negotiations with Democrats, save health care, and prevent a hunger crisis. That’s why I’ve taken actions including:

| Additionally, we continue to face a significant health care crisis because of the policies of Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans. Open enrollment for 2026 health coverage begins on November 1, 2025. HealthSource Rhode Island has begun sending renewal notices. You can visit the HSRI website to learn more.

| If Republicans do not act, 22 million Americans, including 41,000 Rhode Islanders, will see their health care premiums soar. Some Rhode Islanders affected by the Republicans' health care policy choices could see their premiums hiked by over 200%. I spoke to a 69-year-old retiree from Riverside who told me that without an extension of the ACA tax credits, she would see $420 in extra health insurance costs, while seeing the deductibles for her husband's prescription double.

| |
| |
| It’s my job to do everything I can in Congress to stop Rhode Islanders, and all Americans, from being poorer, hungrier, and sicker. This work helps all of us. That’s what this fight is all about — I’ll continue to stay at it because it’s the right thing to do. Congress must open our government and continue serving our country and its people. |
| |
| Sincerely, |

I am working in Congress to reverse cuts to vital research and ensure every Rhode Islander can access and afford health care.

| | Amidst the shutdown, I met with members of SEIU 1199 New England to hear how the Trump administration’s policies are hurting working people.
From rising costs for health care and food to violent immigration enforcement, I will keep fighting the policies that are hurting Rhode Island families.
