** Community Conversation: Preventing Childhood Lead Poisoning
------------------------------------------------------------

Childhood lead poisoning is completely preventable. Yet New York State still leads the nation in cases of children with elevated blood levels. Twelve percent of the children born in the state in 2019 – 28,820 children ([link removed]) – have been diagnosed with elevated blood lead levels. In fact, childhood lead poisoning rates for communities across New York State are five to six times higher ([link removed]) than those in Flint, MI at the peak of its water crisis. And studies show that Black children living below the poverty line are twice as likely to suffer from lead poisoning as poor white children.

Make a Difference

We need your help to change this. Join us for a community conversation on preventing childhood lead poisoning and help us shape a new tool to raise public awareness about the dangers our communities face. We’ll meet on Thursday, Oct. 30th from 6:00-8:00 PM at WE ACT’s office, which is located on the Second Floor of 1854 Amsterdam Avenue (at the corner of West 152nd Street). Contact Liz Reyes at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]?subject=&body=) or 646-983-7098 to RSVP.

Yosef Robele and Anastasia Gordon were featured in a Columbia Spectator ([link removed]) article on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) plan to revoke the Endangerment Finding ([link removed]) . Issued under the Clean Air Act, the Endangerment Finding determined that greenhouse gas emissions pose a threat to public health. Backed by numerous scientific studies, this finding required the federal government to regulate these emissions. Under the Trump administration, the EPA is trying to rescind the finding, so that they will no longer regulate the greenhouse gas emissions produced by vehicles, power plants, and any other sources of pollution – giving polluters free-reign to make our
air toxic again and hasten the climate crisis. WE ACT is one of the 100 organizations that submitted comments to the EPA opposing this move.
