Dear Friend,
As the government shutdown nears the 30 day mark, the urgency to address our nation’s healthcare crisis is growing. Cost-saving healthcare tax credits are set to expire soon and if Congress fails to act, families will see their monthly premiums jump by hundreds of dollars. Instead of working to prevent that, Speaker Johnson canceled votes and sent the House to their districts.
This crisis can’t wait. States are already receiving notices that their health care premiums are going up next year. Without action, 392,000 people across Minnesota would have an average rate increase of 21.5% more each month for the same coverage, with others facing even more significant increases.
I’m collecting stories from Minnesotans about how the federal government shutdown is impacting them and their families. If you have or will be affected by the ongoing shutdown, please share your story here.
Important Update: SNAP and MFIP Food Benefits Suspended for November
If the government shutdown does not end by October 31st, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) food benefits will not be issued for November until the shutdown ends or the federal government provides further guidance. The cash portion of MFIP will still be issued.
We know how stressful and uncertain this situation is for families who rely on these programs to put food on the table. If you or someone you know needs help finding food in the meantime, visit Hunger Solutions to locate food shelves near you.

Youth Advisory Council Meeting
This week, I welcomed a group of students to the first meeting of our 2025–2026 Youth Advisory Council! The Youth Advisory Council gives students a firsthand look at how government works while empowering them to use their voices to make change in their communities. Over the course of the year, students will meet with local leaders and elected officials. They’ll also identify and research issues that matter most to them, then develop actionable solutions through research, discussion, and collaboration. By the end of the program, these students will have a deeper understanding of how laws and policies impact their lives. My office is proud to support the next generation of changemakers and I look forward to seeing the powerful ideas the students bring forward this year!
