Last weekend, I joined tens of thousands of Arizonans and millions of proud Americans across the country protesting against the actions of Trump’s authoritarian regime.

It was truly uplifting to see the number of people who are rejecting the extreme actions this administration is taking to try to sow fear and division among us.

These peaceful protests represent what America is all about. We have the right to talk openly and freely about what we believe and what we know this country stands for–that’s what makes America so special.

My parents came to the United States as young people fleeing an authoritarian regime in Iran. They came here for democracy, for freedom, and they raised me to know that these ideals are worth fighting for.

They made sure my brother and I knew that democracy is not a given. It’s something that we have to fight for generation after generation, against leaders like Donald Trump who will take advantage of us at the first chance we give them.
