Dear john,
This week, the Trump administration has finished demolishing the East Wing of the White House for Donald Trump's new ballroom.
Not only has the project’s estimated cost has risen from $200 million to $300 million, the Trump Administration ordered employees of the adjacent Treasury Department not to share photos and to escort journalists away trying to shoot video of the demolition.
The East Wing represented the softer, nonpolitical side of “the People’s House” since it housed the offices of the first lady and the social secretary and served as “the public’s doorway to the White House,” said James McDaniel, who worked as a liaison between the National Park Service and the White House from 1984 to 2002.
It appears much of the country disapproves of the demolition of the East Wing to build Trump's new ballroom.
Below is some recent polling:
Only 10% of Americans strongly approve of the decision to demolish part of the East Wing of the White House as part of the renovation
Only 23% of Americans believe addition of a 90,000‑square-foot ballroom will have a positive impact on the White House
