Dear Democrats,
Anyone who has ever visited the White House remembers the feeling – you walk through those gates and feel the weight of history pressing gently on your shoulders. You think of Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation, FDR launching the New Deal, Kennedy daring us to reach the moon, Theodore Roosevelt expanding national parks,or Barack Obama signing the Affordable Care Act Between those walls, the story of America has been written—again and again—in courage and conviction.
Perhaps the most beautiful part of the White House is its simplicity. It is not a royal palace or a castle. It is a simple building. Its simplicity carries the unspoken promise of America that anyone, even those without means, can one day occupy those walls and lead the nation. And those who occupy it are not permanent residents, they are only tenants of a house owned by the people to do the work for the people.
When I was in graduate school in Washington, D.C., I passed the White House every day. Morning and evening, I’d glance through the gates, and every single time, I felt the same quiet awe. This photo I took on my last day there reminds me of that feeling—the pride of being an American and the belief that our democracy, however imperfect, endures.

This week, that belief took a gut punch.
On Tuesday, cranes rolled in to demolish the East Wing of the White House. Within days, it was already demolished—replaced by a $300 million (up from previous $200 and $250 million estimates) ballroom commissioned by Donald Trump.
It’s not just the destruction of a building. It’s a symbol of everything that’s wrong with the GOP’s America. While Trump builds himself a ballroom funded by corporate giants looking for access like Lockheed Martin, Blackrock, tobacco companies, and crypto giants, , the government remains shut down just as families are about to lose their healthcare and federal workers are asked to work without pay. Health care costs climb while Republicans refuse to negotiate to keep it affordable.
In the GOP’s America, Donald Trump gets a $300 million ballroom.
But in our America—Democrats fight for the people who built this country, not for those who demolish it.
That’s why I’m asking you to chip in a few dollars today to keep the Democratic Party of New Mexico strong. The Democratic Party of New Mexico is on the front line against Trump’s assault on our democracy. We’ve made incredible progress here, but his allies will undoubtedly pour millions into New Mexico to try and erode that progress. We can’t let them.
Your contribution—no matter how small—keeps this fight alive. It keeps the people’s house, and our democracy, in the hands of the people.
