Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

If you're looking to stay in and beat the heat this July, we're here with some suggestions to save you from sweltering outdoors! Our Goethe on Demand program continues until July 31, so check out our selection of free movies to stream through the rest of the month.

Cinemas may be shuttered right now, but our Los Angeles colleague Daniel Chaffey introduces you to Lodderbast – a tiny cinema in Hannover which is possibly the smallest in the world – in Custom Culture, our new blog that features culture tips and analysis from Goethe-Institut team members across the North American region.

Speaking of cinemas, have you wondered what the rise of streaming in lockdown might mean for movie theaters, once we're able to return to public spaces like before? Join the Goethe-Institut Washington and DC Shorts Film Festival on July 16 at 7:00pm for a panel discussion on the future of the movie theater. On July 21 at 5:00pm, Goethe, Beyond Nuclear, and Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung will hold a post-film discussion to follow a virtual screening of the acclaimed Cuban drama Un Traductor.

Custom Culture: "Lodderbast - Sometimes Great Cinemas Come in Small Packages"

Tucked away among office buildings and apartments in Hannover’s Warmbüchenviertel neighborhood, stands Lodderbast, Germany’s smallest cinema, and according to its owners, possibly the smallest in the world.

Goethe Book Club Goes Digital: Fall 2020 Books Announced!

The Fall 2020 titles for our (temporarily digital) Goethe Book Club are in!  Join local German professor Amanda Sheffer (The Catholic University of America) on August 4 to chat about Volker Kutscher's Babylon Berlin (Der nasse Fisch), the first book in his Gereon Rath series – which later inspired the wildly popular television show. On November 10, we'll discuss Daniel Kehlmann's latest novel Tyll, which revamps the medieval German folktale of Till Eulenspiegel. December 1, we'll dive back into the Krimi genre, this time with Frank Tallis's English-language novel Mortal Mischief – the first installment in the Max Liebermann series, which now serves as the basis for the hit thriller series Vienna Blood.
