Donald Trump is reportedly demanding that the Department of Justice pay him $230 million in damages related to the criminal cases brought against him in 2023, a request that has no parallel in the history of our country.
This is a particularly outrageous government ethics issue— even for Trump.
For years, Trump has been using his political position to funnel taxpayer money to himself through his businesses—but demanding the DOJ pay him millions is unprecedented and beyond unacceptable.
This is exactly the kind of abuse of power CREW was built to stop. To hold Trump accountable, we need you with us. Chip in now to help us expose his corruption and power our fight for an ethical and accountable government → [[link removed]]

Trump’s request is related to two cases: the FBI and special counsel investigation into his campaign due to the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election and the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago due to his handling of classified documents.
He reportedly submitted these claims demanding millions from the Department of Justice back in 2023 and 2024, before he was president again.
To be very clear, while Trump claims that the government violated his rights and engaged in malicious prosecution, those claims are baseless. The truth is, both cases were properly handled.
Normally, empty demands like this would be tossed out without another thought. But the two people who could grant Trump’s request happen to have been his lawyer in one of those cases, Todd Blanche, and his co-defendant’s lawyer, Stanley Woodward Jr.
That’s a glaring ethics issue.
How can you expect lawyers in those cases to be impartial when deciding on granting millions in damages to their former client—especially when that client is now their boss and the president of the United States?
Blanche and Woodward should recuse, but that still wouldn’t solve the ethics problem in the president personally demanding millions from his own government, funded by taxpayers.
No DOJ lawyer would be free of the conflict at play in a decision about whether to pay the president—their boss—$230 million. Unfortunately, Attorney General Pam Bondi fired the DOJ ethics official back in July, meaning the department is flying blind.
It gets worse. According to the New York Times, the DOJ does not “require a public announcement of settlements made for administrative claims before they become lawsuits.”
That means the DOJ could pay Trump $230 million in complete secrecy.
John, nothing about this is normal. Trump has for years used his political position to funnel taxpayer money to himself through his businesses. But demanding that the DOJ pay him millions? That’s unprecedented and beyond unacceptable.
CREW is fighting to expose these ethics issues and Trump’s profiteering and holding our government accountable to the people it serves.
