Dear Neighbors,  

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). In many of these cases, firearms significantly escalate the lethality of domestic violence. When an abuser has access to a gun, the risk of homicide for intimate partners increases fivefold. We must use every tool available to protect those at risk of violence and prevent these tragedies from occurring, leaving families to mourn the loss of a loved one.

In Minnesota, DFLers worked to pass the Minnesota's Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO), or "red flag" law. Since its implementation, this life-saving tool has given families and communities a vital mechanism to prevent senseless gun violence. Let’s work together to spread awareness about this critical tool, empowering everyone to know these resources save lives and can prevent future tragedies.  

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has staff dedicated to helping you if you’re concerned about a loved one’s access to firearms. Those with concerns can contact DASC at (612) 348-5073 to ask for the Extreme Risk Protection Order Specialist or email [email protected], keeping in mind that the petitioner must file the order in the county where the respondent resides.

*SNAP Food Assistance* 

We are in the third week of the Republican-led federal government shutdown, a failure driven by political loyalty despite their full control of Washington. If the federal government shutdown continues into November, more than 440,000 Minnesotans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be at risk of having their food assistance funds run out. 

Holding critical lifelines like healthcare and food assistance hostage for tax cuts for billionaires and large corporations is unconscionable. My office is open to help, please continue to share your experiences during this shutdown and I will do everything I can to support you and your loved ones.  

If you or someone you know needs help with food this fall, Hunger Solutions has a list of statewide food shelves and additional resources here [ [link removed] ]. You can also use this "food finder" [ [link removed] ] tool to quickly connect with open food resources and meal sites across Minnesota, powered by Second Harvest Heartland. 

If you’re able to, please consider making a contribution to a local food shelf. They’re already struggling to meet the demand, and the longer the uncertainty around SNAP continues, the more pressure they will face.

*State of Education Town Hall* 

On, Thursday, November 20, our SD 59 team is partnering with Superintendent Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams, Sharon El-Amin Minneapolis District 2 Board Member, and Minnesota Education Commissioner Willie Jett for a special State of Education Town Hall to discuss the current state of education in Minnesota, highlight local school achievements and opportunities for growth, and explore ways to promote equity, access, and student success in our community.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this job is the opportunity to connect with our community members and witness the important work they're doing to improve our neighborhoods. This past month was full of engagement, including visits to several key organizations and attending vital community conversations. These included visiting a potato farm on the AgriGrowth tour to see how food is grown in Minnesota to support the needs in the state and the region, attending conversations about how to ensure that the Blue Line works for our community, and celebrating the incredible runners at the Twin Cities Marathon.
