SHARING NEW JERSEYANS’ HEALTHCARE STORIES:
In New Jersey, people are feeling the pressure of the healthcare crisis we’re in, and Senator Kim is working hard to highlight and uplift the stories you have been sharing with us. In addition to your stories, the numbers don’t lie. 24 million people across this country rely on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and over 4 million people are at risk of losing their healthcare when the ACA tax credits expire. In New Jersey, this will have a real impact:
- 1 in 4 people with chronic conditions may lose coverage
- 1.6 million kids will suffer as a result of steep prices
- On average, insurance premium costs will close to double
- 3.3 million small business owners and self-employed people may be impacted
Johnanna from Lambertville, NJ shared that she is a teacher and “this year our premiums increased so much that almost all of us lost our raise for the year.” She also mentioned other rising costs that have been burdensome, stating “Something’s got to give.”
Mary from Landing, NJ shared that she pays $470/month for healthcare. She wrote to us, “I’ve cut back on everything I could in my life, just to make ends meet now. I’m almost 60, I’ve worked all my life. I thought it would get easier as you get older but it just gets worse. Everything has gone up so much, if the subsidies aren’t renewed, I don’t know what I’ll do.”
Daina from Jersey City, NJ shared that if the ACA subsidies were to stop, she could be paying $1,160 if not more each month. These prices are skyrocketing, and NJ families are feeling the strain of high healthcare costs amid high grocery, housing, and utility costs, as well. Thank you for sharing your stories with us. We will continue to uplift your voice for as long as it takes.
