Soon, I’ll be getting married. 😊
And thanks to Obergefell v. Hodges , that marriage will be recognized throughout the country. Obergefell didn’t just happen out of nowhere—it was the result of years of state and federal policymaking, court cases, and tireless activism. Like my own marriage, the moment it happens comes courtesy of all the smaller moments along the way.
In a moment when our fundamental rights are under attack and our trans children, friends and siblings are in danger, it can be hard to see any work being done right now as a sign of progress. But every civil rights victory is the result of a civil rights movement —one built day by day, person by person.
