Hi John,
This is urgent. Oil giant Equinor has resubmitted its application to develop the Rosebank oilfield in the North Sea after losing a legal battle earlier this year. That means there are just weeks left to stop Rosebank – and we all have a crucial role to play.
This is our last chance to stop Rosebank. For the next 30 days, the government is asking the public’s views about whether this carbon bomb should be allowed to go ahead. After this, the government could make a new decision to scrap or greenlight Rosebank at any time.
Alongside our allies, we are gathering messages from the public to send to the prime minister, telling him why the government must not approve this climate disaster. Can you write a message to add to the consultation response, and make sure the government feels as much pressure as possible to do the right thing?

To help you write your message, here are four reasons why we have to stop Rosebank:
1. It would be a climate disaster that will cost lives in the global south
The climate pollution from Rosebank’s reserves would be more than the combined annual emissions of all 28 low-income countries. [1] The World Meteorological Organization reported this week that 90% of weather, water and climate-related deaths in the last 50 years happened in developing countries.[2] We cannot allow the global south to be further sacrificed to the greed of the fossil fuel industry. We must stop Rosebank.
2. It won’t do anything to bring bills down or help working people in the UK
Fossil fuels are sold on a volatile global market. The UK government will have no control over how much oil produced in the UK costs or where it’s sold, meaning that it won’t contribute to energy security or lower bills for hard-pushed people around the UK. Renewable energy could save households money and will avoid the exorbitant costs of climate change, which is projected to have cost households £3,000 in 2025 alone.[3] So why would the government spend years and billions investing in a project that will help keep the world hooked on a volatile and expensive energy system that only profits a powerful few?
3. The public will pay to enrich the fossil fuel industry
Earlier this year, we released research that showed the public is still paying billions each year to the fossil fuel industry.[4] The same generous tax system that allows this to happen will also mean that the public will end up paying up to 80% of the costs for developing Rosebank.[5] This would be a slap in the face to every single person in the UK who is struggling under the cost of living crisis.
4. Huge numbers of us oppose Rosebank
Earlier this year, over 1,000,000 of us signed a petition calling for the government to stop Rosebank and end all new oil and gas. MPs from every political party, as well as trade union leaders, faith leaders and hundreds of scientists and experts have also publicly opposed Rosebank.
We are a massive movement. And we have overturned Rosebank once before. Now is the last chance to make sure this climate-wrecking project never breaks ground. Can you write a message for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, and the rest of the government to let them know why they must stop Rosebank?
