In the past few months, we’ve seen individual states like Texas gerrymander their congressional maps for the 2026 elections.

But the Supreme Court might be about to set off a new, region-wide mad dash of redistricting, with the entire South drawing new maps by the beginning of next year, and with states like Texas empowered to enact even more extreme gerrymanders.

Here’s how: The Court appears ready to strike down protections in the Voting Rights Act Act against racially discriminatory maps. And they could issue a ruling as early as next month, which would give states enough time to set new district lines for the 2026 elections.

By getting rid of districts where communities of color can elect candidates of their choice, lawmakers could hand 19 House seats to the GOP as a direct result of the Court decision — and up to 27 seats through additional redistricting.

The far right is trying to manipulate the 2026 midterms and pre-determine their outcome in plain sight. But at Fair Fight Action, we’ll keep doing the work to ensure free and fair elections, including mobilizing to stop brazen gerrymandering.

We must be prepared to work state-by-state to prevent new gerrymandered maps from silencing voters of color.

Through mass mobilization, state-level organizing, coalition-building, lobbying, and litigation, our broad, pro-voter movement can respond to new threats and demand fair representation.
