Banning abortion is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes
[[link removed]]
Pregnant women crossing borders to get an abortion. People who miscarry face jail time or dying from infection. Doctors who won’t perform lifesaving procedures on a pregnant patient for fear of prosecution.
For years, this was the kind of thing that happened in Poland, Nicaragua or El Salvador. Now, it’s headline news in the United States.
As a scholar who studies the relationship between reproductive rights and political regimes, I see the U.S. mirroring a pattern that has happened in authoritarian regimes around the world. When a government erects barriers to comprehensive reproductive care, it doesn’t just cause more death and suffering for women and their families. Such policies are often a first step in the gradual decline of democracies.
Yet, the U.S. is different in a meaningful way. Here, abortion has historically been framed as a personal right to privacy. In many other countries I’ve studied, abortion is viewed more as a collective right that is inextricably tied to broader social and economic issues.

Hawai‘i Expands Protections for Midwives After Court Challenge
[[link removed]]
Today, the state of Hawai‘i agreed to end a case brought by the Center for Reproductive Rights, Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation (NHLC), and the law firm Perkins Coie. The case challenged a law that restricted midwifery in the state, preventing pregnant people in Hawai‘i from using skilled midwives for their pregnancies and births, as they have for generations, and threatening Native Hawaiian traditional birthing practices with criminal liability. The lawsuit shed light on these problematic restrictions when it was filed in 2024, prompting Hawai‘i lawmakers to repeal many of the midwifery restrictions at issue in the case. Now, Native Hawaiian midwives can continue providing culturally-informed care to their communities without threat of prison time, and more people can train to become midwives through a range of pathways.
“Pregnant people should be able to give birth with whichever skilled provider they choose —whether that be at home with a midwife or in a hospital with a doctor. Repealing these laws is a significant step towards making that a reality in Hawai‘i. Midwives have a long history of being criminalized and pushed out of the healthcare system, even though pregnant people face a real lack of maternal healthcare providers. ” said Rachana Desai Martin, Chief U.S. Program Officer at the Center for Reproductive Rights. “There is still more work to do to shore up protections for midwives in Hawai‘i and to address the vast maternal health crisis in the U.S. But thanks to the tireless work of our plaintiffs and advocates, traditional Native Hawaiian midwives don’t have to be afraid that they might be thrown into jail for their work.”

Abortion restrictions may be fueling a rise in domestic violence, experts warn
[[link removed]]
On average, a woman’s risk of being killed in the U.S. increases by 20% when pregnant or after giving birth. Pregnant and postpartum women are more likely to be killed than to die from childbirth-related issues. Many killings are the result of domestic violence. Special correspondent Sarah Varney reports from Louisiana, where experts say abortion restrictions are putting women further at risk.
