# [#]San Diego is home to the largest concentration of military personnel in the nation. Nearly 100,000 active duty service members live, work and raise their families here – including a third of the entire Marine Corps and 60% of the entire fleet of Navy ships.
So, when the federal government shuts down and active-duty servicemembers are forced to work without pay, San Diego feels the pain more than most.
Many military members and their families already live paycheck to paycheck, struggling with the increasing costs of housing and childcare. They can’t afford the uncertainty of not knowing when their next paycheck will come – but the current government shutdown is about to enter its fourth week with no end in sight.
That’s why, for each week this continues, I’ll be donating my take-home salary to local nonprofits working to support San Diegans who are most impacted by the shutdown. In the first week, I donated to STEP (Support the Enlisted Project), a non-profit that supports enlisted servicemembers and their families.

STEP, along with nearly 100 military and veteran-focused non-profit organizations operating in San Diego County, is doing critically important work, especially needed in this moment.
Learn more about STEP here, and make a donation if you can. Every dollar makes a difference, now more than ever. [[link removed]]
If there’s a non-profit organization in San Diego that you want to call attention to, reply directly to this email to let me know.
More updates to come.
