Shoko Arakaki , UNFPA Director of Humanitarian Affairs, saw how displaced women and girls are coping amid conflict in Democratic Republic of the Congo. She explained: “Congolese women and girls endure tremendous suffering but never give up on their hope.”

Ms. Arakaki met midwives continuing to deliver babies under unimaginable conditions, while hearing from mothers who had lost everything. She heard from a 14-year-old girl who had survived multiple sexual assaults and was recovering at a UNFPA-supported hospital. Despite it all, the girl continues to dream of returning to school.

Violence uprooted this 16-year-old rape survivor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The human cost is widespread: thousands of women and girls are affected by violence, displacement, and collapsing services. Many arrive at clinics that are stretched beyond capacity — they’ve run out of supplies, counselors, and staff. Even before the conflict's recent escalation, three women died every hour from pregnancy and childbirth complications in the DRC.

Health clinics that once offered basic maternity care and emergency treatment for survivors of violence are in desperate need of staff and equipment. Some clinics have closed. This is all happening as sexual violence has surged by a third compared with last year. Without a solution to the ongoing conflict, the nightmare for women, girls, and families is expected to deteriorate further.

UNFPA provides essential health services in the DRC for 1.4 million people , focusing on women and girls whose struggles are often overlooked. But the demand for emergency aid is rising sharply with 27 million people in the DRC expected to need humanitarian relief this year.

That’s why we are urgently calling on supporters like you to make a gift to deliver lifesaving care, including clinical treatment for rape, medicines for childbirth, essential supplies, and psychosocial support for survivors in critical need. Will you ensure women and girls are not alone? [[link removed]?]

DELIVER LIFESAVING RELIEF [[link removed]?]

DRC is known as one of the world’s most neglected humanitarian crises. Sexual exploitation, abuse, and coercion are widespread — even more so in overcrowded displacement camps that lack protection and security measures.

UNFPA teams are delivering crucial interventions: post-rape medical treatment, safe delivery support, Mama Kits, and psychosocial care for survivors of violence. Yet, the needs far exceed available resources — and the people who depend on these services are running out of options.

Your gift today can change and save lives of women and girls in the DRC and crisis regions across the globe. Make a gift today and help stock essential medicines, deploy midwives and mobile teams to displacement camps, ensure access to maternal health services, provide safe spaces for women and girls, and keep hotlines open for medical, psychosocial, and legal support for violence survivors.
