Hey everyone: Alex Wagner here.
We are living through a, ahem, unique moment in our country’s history. Americans have lost trust in the media, institutions, and even their neighbors. The political party in charge has inflamed and exploited our fears—at every turn—with staggering success.
You’ve heard this all before.
But the swamp of misinformation, outrage, and attacks on democracy aren’t happening in a vacuum. Trump’s policies aren’t just points to be argued over by pundits on television—they have real consequences for real people. So I wanted to talk to them.
That’s why today (!) I’m launching my new show with Crooked Media, Runaway Country [ [link removed] ]. I’m thrilled to be doing it with a team that has such excellent programming—and an even more excellent audience—because it’s high time someone started getting to the heart of the matter. I guess that someone is me!
Mind you, this ain’t some 2017-era “Coastal-elite-goes-spelunking-in-Trump-country” endeavor. I want to tell stories. I want to put faces on the headlines. I want to understand what’s happening to the people most affected by this administration’s policies—from the furthest-left activists to the die-hard MAGA faithful, to all the people who’ve found themselves in the middle of a fight they never asked for. Turns out, everyone has a lot to say.
When we talk about attacks on the press, you’ve almost certainly heard about Trump’s war on network news and late-night television, but what about local journalists in small-towns, struggling to report the news under threat from the very people they’re supposed to be covering? What have Trump’s attacks at the national level done to journalism at the local level? I want to hear from those reporters.
We know about MAHA’s war on vaccines and their efforts to sow distrust in science, but what about communities living through that war…and experiencing an active measles outbreak for the first time in generations? What about the doctors serving those communities? I want to hear from them, too.
After we hear from the people on the frontlines, I’ll try to wrap my head around what these stories mean for the rest of us, with some help from the smartest people I know.
