"Employers should embrace those who are on the spectrum and create training methods that work better for them."

Meet Eric B.

For Texas native Eric B., autism has never been a limitation, it’s been a key ingredient in his success. Diagnosed at the age of two, Eric has spent his life proving that an autism diagnosis doesn’t define what’s possible. His determination, creativity and focus have shaped a thriving career in the culinary arts.

Through Autism Speaks, Eric found not just community, but opportunity. His participation in the Houston Chef Gala, a fundraising event that unites top chefs from across the country to showcase their talents in support of autism awareness, has helped him connect and collaborate with some of the best in the industry. These experiences have opened doors, expanded his professional network and firmly stamped his place in the culinary world.

“I had the opportunity to attend Autism Speaks’ first annual Town Hall meeting. While I was there, I mentioned my culinary arts degree,” he said. “That led to me being invited to their Chef Gala, where I’ve been able to network with several of the best chefs in the industry.”

Today, Eric works in the kitchen at a popular Mexican restaurant in the Houston area and is working toward his culinary dreams. His story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when employers recognize the strengths that autistic individuals bring to the workplace. When given the chance to shine, both employee and employer benefit, and inclusion becomes more than a goal; it becomes a recipe for success.

We sat down with Eric to talk about his journey, the importance of neurodiversity in employment, and how Autism Speaks has supported his path from aspiring student to thriving chef.
