The self is inside and in between all of the things. Which makes our personal practice critical not just to our individual healing but to our social, political and ecological healing. Practice at the level of self will look different for different people, depending on our lived experience and proximity to privilege and oppression, but for all of us it involves radical awareness, action and accountability.
It starts with asking hard questions that challenge and complicate our own truth and having some critical awareness around the stories we make up, fact-finding, and getting curious about what we are feeling. It’s how we check ourselves and interrogate the stories that we tell ourselves about ourselves.
This “interrogation” isn’t about judgment or shame—those are just more weapons of division. Rather it is a willingness to be clear-seeing about ourselves, about how we have been socialized and shaped by a toxic culture, about how we have become separated from the truth of our mutual belonging.
American Detox Retreat is a bold and embodied exploration of how we’ve been shaped by history, trauma, and culture and what it’s going to take to heal. Based on the critically acclaimed book by Kerri Kelly, this journey invites us to challenge the myths that have shaped our reality — separation, supremacy, and scarcity — so that we can move toward personal and collective wholeness. It's not too late to join this epic journey on the edge of the earth.👇

It's not too late to retreat!
AMERICAN DETOX RETREAT
Esalen Institute, Big Sur CA
October 27th - 31st, 2025
Save your spot!
American Detox is an embodied retreat to unravel the myths that shape us. Through ritual and embodied play, we’ll compost the stories that confine us and begin to imagine and embody new myths of liberation. Come curious, come tender, come ready to move into the possibility of freedom. Through dynamic movement, radical inquiry and creative engagement we will:
- Unlearn limiting beliefs, inherited stories, and toxic patterns of being and doing.
- Explore transformative practices that move energy, disrupt patterns, and metabolize trauma.
- Build greater capacity and resilience for the discomfort of change and the uncertainty of (im)possible futures.
- Cultivate an everyday practice of collective care that ensures all of us can be well.
- Reimagine ways of being, doing, surviving, and thriving together.
Our journey is set at the Edge of the Earth — Esalen Institute has a rich history serving as both sanctuary and crucible for evolving the consciousness of activists, leaders, and healers. Located on the ancestral lands of the Esselen people. Esalen is renowned not just for it’s offerings, but for it’s profound and natural beauty on the cliffs of the pacific coast where three water sources converge: a fresh-water spring (Porter Springs), mineral hot springs, and the Pacific Ocean. I have been many times and can testify: it is a powerful portal for healing and transformation.
