Okay, let’s get into it.

Team, I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and it got to the point where I just couldn’t stay quiet any longer. What Jay Jones said was not okay. We know it. He knows it. And he’s owned it and apologized.

Let’s discuss the elephant in the room: The hypocrisy in the air is thick – Republicans are coming after Jones, but have turned a blind eye and remained complicit to Trump’s frequent, politically violent tweets and publicly made comments. Not to mention that the GOP candidate for Governor, Winsome Earle-Sears, stated, “murder is murder and one day it’s going to be your turn” to supporters of reproductive rights. Where was the outrage over that?

Now, here’s the thing: If voters re-elect the Republican incumbent Jason Miyares to attorney general, he could cause incredible damage. It matters when Virginia joins a major lawsuit or doesn’t. It matters how Virginia shows up during critical moments that could define the future of our nation. And it matters what message it would send nationally should Virginia voters split the ticket.

Plus, re-electing Republican Miyares would set him up nicely to run for governor in 4 years. We can’t let that happen.

The text messages in question were from years ago and were just recently released. Yes, we should hold Jones accountable, but we cannot hand keys back to extremists and let another purity test define this moment. Republicans are uplifting this story now because they want to divide us and turn us against each other. But there is far too much on the line to let that happen.

We must keep our eye on the ball – and elect candidates who will defend our freedoms, from reproductive rights to marriage equality. As attorney general, Jay Jones will do just that.
