My family comes from humble roots. At five years old, my dad immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico in 1950 at five years old. After graduating high school, he joined the military, and after serving two tours in Vietnam, he was able to earn his US citizenship. He then spent three decades as a police officer — a good-paying union job that launched our family into the middle class. My father’s story taught me a valuable lesson my parents never let me forget: With hard work, ANYTHING is possible. I carry that lesson with me every day. My parents couldn’t afford to send me to college, so I served coffee, painted fences, and juggled whatever odd jobs I could to afford tuition. I tell you all this because never did I imagine that years (and several coffees poured, and fences painted) later I would be in Congress, and working to defend one of the most vulnerable House seats! I’ve seen firsthand the change that can come when you work hard. But when I look around today, I can also see that for so many families struggling to make ends meet, simply working hard isn’t cutting it anymore. Donald Trump, and far-right extremists are prioritizing their own wallets and corporate greed over Americans.
