Just like every authoritarian dictator before him, Donald Trump is doing everything in his power to co-opt or crush all independent sources of news and information so that he alone controls what Americans see, hear, and believe.
He knows that his authority rests on a facade of invincibility so people will think resistance is futile. Knowledge is power, and Trump's greatest fear is a fully informed electorate.
That's why he stripped local NPR and PBS stations of federal funding, forcing many to cut back or shut down. Meanwhile, too many corporate news outlets have capitulated to Trump without hardly putting up a fight.
Common Dreams now stands among the small and shrinking number of truly independent news outlets willing and able to challenge this regime daily without pulling punches.
We don't bow. We won't break. We'd shut this whole operation down before we bend the knee to authoritarians like this. It will never happen.
