John -
I don’t even know where to begin. This is a long email, because there’s so much damage being done to our Democracy.
Donald Trump has done a lot to harm during the past several months. He’s deployed the National Guard and federal troops to cities across the nation (cities that happen to vote blue). He commuted con-artist George Santos’ prison sentence. His ICE is rounding up women and children and deporting them without due process - in fact, he’s using ICE as his own personal army as they have purchased guided missile warheads.
He’s bombing fishermen’s boats in international waters. He’s leaving American farmers behind. He’s demolishing the White House to build a ballroom while the US government he leads is shut down.
But even more egregious, he’s interfering in North Carolina, and the (all male) Republican leadership are eating out of his hands and redrawing our congressional maps for the fifth time in four years.
Republican legislators blamed California and the radical left (anyone but themselves) - but the fact is, Republican-controlled Texas began this with their redistricting efforts to steal more congressional seats. Donald Trump called on NC Senator Phil Berger, demanding that he manipulate our maps to give him one more Republican member of Congress.
Here’s the reality.
Of the 11,000 public comments, ONLY THREE WERE IN FAVOR of the new maps.
84% of North Carolina voters say politicians should not draw districts to help their party win.
So why are the Republicans in the General Assembly prioritizing cheating over public service? Why are these men putting party over policy? Why are they ignoring the needs of their constituents? Why do we still not have a state budget for this fiscal year? (Forty-eight US states managed to pass a budget this year. NC is not one of them. Are we great yet?)
I’m angry. And you should be too. Because everything Trump and today’s Republican Party do sabotages our democracy and ignores the will of – and the needs of – the people.
We just witnessed a record-breaking seven million people peacefully protest across the country on Saturday. They exercised their First Amendment rights to fight for our democracy. They made it clear that we will not stand by while extremists try to take away our freedoms.
But anger alone isn’t enough. We have to turn our outrage into organization, our frustration into fuel.
At Lillian’s List, we’re doing exactly that - recruiting the next wave of women to run for the NCGA in 2026, expanding our training programs through 2028 to prepare them to win, and working to get these brave, optimistic women elected and re-elected.
