This shutdown didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of political gamesmanship from Republicans who refuse to put people before partisanship.

But the even greater danger is what comes next.

If they don’t act to extend the Affordable Care Act’s tax credits, we could see health insurance premiums explode for middle-class families, small business owners, and seniors.

This isn’t just speculation. People in our district are already sounding the alarm. In a recent opinion piece, I mentioned the story of a family of four whose health care premiums will rise 300% per year, among many other similar stories across the district.

We need to stop this now.

I’ve deferred my own pay during this shutdown, because if public servants and working families are being asked to sacrifice, Congress shouldn’t be exempt.

We need to reopen the government and protect access to affordable care — anything less is a failure of leadership.
