I’m a proud member of the Pueblo of Laguna. I was a military kid and
raised an amazing child as a single mom. I’m an auntie, a sister, and a
public servant.

But I’m not supposed to be here.

What I mean by that is our country was built on principles and systems
meant to either assimilate or exterminate people like me. Either to make
me blend into the background of America, or get rid of me altogether.

But, against all odds, I am still here.

I’m deeply proud of the opportunities I had to break barriers, first in
Congress and most recently as the 54th Secretary of the Interior. But
every day under this administration, we are reminded that our fight for
true representation, equity, and justice is far from over.

No state in America has ever elected a Native woman as governor. [ [link removed] ]Can

When I was growing up, there weren’t many women in elected office, and
even fewer Indigenous people. How was I to know my path was even possible?

By running a campaign that was brave, fierce, and rooted in the power of
community, I was able to stand on the shoulders of my ancestors and prove
to young girls of color that they too belong everywhere decisions are
being made.

photographed by Shane Balkowitsch, who specializes in a historic style of
wet plate photography.

This is why I believe representation matters. And why I think every single
one of us has a role to play in taking the power of that representation to
the next level.

[ [link removed] ]Together, we can make history in this election. Please chip in
$5 or any amount you can afford today so we can build the
strong, well-resourced campaign it will take to win this race.

Be fierce,

Deb
