A group chat between leaders of Young Republican groups was recently leaked – 2,900 pages of texts show the use of despicable language – like “f----t,” “retarded” and “n--ga” which appeared more than 251 times combined.

In these messages, they make fun of women, use sexual assault as a punchline, and make jokes about slavery and some of the darkest moments in human history.

We are bringing this to your attention because these young, ambitious Republican leaders are likely future lawmakers who might one day be the ones writing policy pertaining to sexual assault, civil rights, and the safety of American constituents.

We know these text messages accurately reflect how so many politicians feel about women and other minorities. We know this from the way they legislate and the way we’ve watched them prioritize opportunities to control women’s bodies through policy. While we may be reading messages from a subset of conservative future lawmakers, we know this is a reflection of widespread values.
