John,

We know how executive orders and Congressional actions are impacting our lives. But the vast majority of laws that influence our daily lives are made at a local level. From creating the state budget for education and social services to passing legislation that protects people like us from discrimination and other key decisions, state legislatures and their members hold immense power. And right now, there are not enough people like us in these key positions.

Even with recent election wins, New Americans are alarmingly underrepresented in state legislatures. 82% of state legislators are white. 9 states still don't have a single New American state legislator. This representation gap is why we created the State of Representation 2020 [[link removed]] . Our report is the first to examine the make up of our state representation, study which states are making progress, and highlight the growing political power New Americans can and should have in state legislatures.

Working together, we can make these recommendations a reality and replace the pale, stale, and male establishment with bold New Americans who will carry our movement forward, ushering in a new, inclusive era of our democracy!

In Solidarity,
The NAL Team
