Hi John,
Last week, scientists reported that the world has crossed its first irreversible climate tipping point: widespread coral dieback caused by rising temperatures.[1] And yet, world leaders are still dragging their feet over climate action.
This year’s UN climate talks (COP30) in the climate-threatened Amazon in Brazil are a crucial moment. Fossil fuel lobbyists will doubtless be there in their thousands again, distracting and delaying. And while Brazilian president Lula Da Silva calls for bold global climate action, his government has just given the go ahead for oil drilling in the Amazon.[2] We can’t wait for any government to push the climate fight forward – we have to unite and demand that they act.
Meanwhile, here in the UK, the economy continues to stall. With the autumn budget looming, Rachel Reeves is under more pressure than ever to either raise taxes or cut spending. The question is: will she squeeze ordinary people again, or finally make those most responsible for the crises pay their fair share?
That’s what the Make Them Pay ([link removed]) alliance we’ve been building is all about. At our demo in September, thousands came together to demand an economy that works for people and planet. We sent a clear message that the solutions to the climate crisis and to inequality are the same: make the polluters and billionaires pay.
On Saturday 15 November, people across the world will take to the streets as part of a global day of climate action during COP30. Here in the UK, we can show that tackling the cost of living and tackling the climate crisis go hand in hand, and that urgent action is affordable if we make the richest pay.
With oil giant Equinor’s new application to develop the Rosebank oilfield in the North Sea now on the government’s desk, it is more important than ever that we demonstrate popular support for climate action.
** How to get involved
------------------------------------------------------------
* Order Make Them Pay materials. Our flyers ([link removed]) and briefings ([link removed]) explain the campaign’s demands and help you start conversations about climate and inequality. Give them to your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours. Just email
[email protected] (mailto:
[email protected]) to order.
* Join or organise a local event for the global day of action: a rally, march or outreach in your community. Check out the map ([link removed]) to see if there’s already something being planned near you. Get in touch if you want any help at all in organising your event.
As the Tories and Reform continue to attack climate action, we have to battle to put it back on the agenda. This is how we strengthen the climate movement, by building it from the ground up, connecting global justice to local action and showing that another economy is possible.
When the economy stalls and prices rise, politicians will always look for someone to carry the cost. We need to spread the word: it must be those most responsible, not ordinary people, who pay.
Together we can turn the tide.
